8 Ways to be Great Parents

Being great parents is not easy. It takes a lot of consistent effort and patience. No one is perfect neither a parent nor a child. Accepting this universal fact and nurturing your relationship with your child is what parents usually miss out.

This article is a club of the eight best pieces of advice of child psychologists and relationship experts, which can have a substantial positive effect on your family.

#1 Quality Time

Parents especially the mother usually give all of their time to their child. But how much of the time we give is considered as quality time? Parents need not concentrate on quantity, it is the quality time which creates childhood memories. And dads who are usually unable to give much time should especially concentrate on giving at least 15-20 minutes of well-planned quality time worth remembering. Be it in the way of story-telling, a nature walk, a board game, or a cycling session, the quality of the time spent is the essence.

#2 Consistency & Fair

You should be consistent in how you react in different situations consistently with your child. This will help her form a mental view about ‘acceptables’ and ‘not acceptable’ in life. If the parents are not consistent, it will confuse the child about the behavior she should develop. Children are good to follow fixed rules from childhood, so be consistent in your behavior.

#3 Non-physical discipline

Discipline is important, but discipline should be imposed in a non-physical way. Do not yell in public, beat or abuse your child to bring her to discipline. It will have unimaginable negative effect in her life. If you want to be angry, show it in a silent way. Any emotion can be easily understood.

#4 Modelling

Do not tell verbally what is right or wrong to your child. Walk the grass. A child is an imitator of her parents. Your child will always try to copy you. If you want to develop good habits, follow them yourself first. You will notice that your child will adopt your good habits without even imposing on them.

#5 Good Listening

Children are the most expressive creatures. They will tell you everything if you are ready to listen. It is when parents stop listening, the communication gap between the child and parent grows broader. Probe them to tell them everything about their day and listen attentively.

#6 No one is perfect

Neither you nor your child is perfect. But still, a relation between two imperfections can be perfect, if they really understand each other’s qualities. You need to accept imperfections in your child and also tell your imperfections to your child. Do not train your child to be perfect, else she will develop the habit of hiding her mistakes from you, to match your image of her in your eyes.

#7 Praising

Encouraging, cheering up and complimenting is essential to develop good habits in your child. As soon as you see your child doing a good stuff, encourage her. Talk about her good habits in a gossiping way to your friends and relatives so that she can listen. Reward your child for helping others or being humble, sharing stuff etc.

#8 Mutual Respect

If you speak with respect to your child, your child will automatically respect you. If you respect your child point of view, there will be seldom any conflicts in opinion difference. This habit will also help your child in her other relationships in life. Show mutual respect, and ask your child to follow that in all her relationships, even with animals, plants and non-living beings.

Working on these tips may require changing some of your habits, but this will build a great relationship with your child which you can cherish lifelong.
