The Power of “Om Namah Shivaya”

"Om Namah Shivaya” is a mahamantra (divine mantra) and the power of this mantra is simply unimaginable.

Om Namah Shivaya means I bow to Shiva. The syllable “ya” at the end of the mantra denotes an offering. Thus the mantra Om Namah Shivaya actually means “I offer to Shiva a respectful invocation of His Name”, and not merely “I respectfully invoke His Name”.

Who is Shiva? Shiva is the last trinity of the existence of universe among creation, sustentation, and destruction. Shiva controls the destruction of what is not useful, negative and hence completes the cycle leading to the first step i.e. creation. Destruction is important for the creation and hence should be treated as important and auspicious as creation. If a creature does not die, the planet will be a chaos and will not survive more than few years.
Om Namah Shivaya” is the mantra that can calm one’s restless mind. It is accepted to be a powerful healing mantra beneficial for all physical and mental ailments. The vibrations of this mantra have vibrations of five aksharas or syllable ie NA, MA, SI, VA and YA. These symbolize the five elements of the body i.e. Prithvi (earth), Jal (water), Vaayu (air), Agni (fire) and Akash (ether). It is also called Siva Panchakshari, the “five-syllable” mantra

While chanting any mantra one needs to surrender to that mantra, its meaning, and energy. While chanting “Om Namah Shivaya”, one needs to admit to self that Lord Shiva is everywhere. Once we imagine and surround oneself with the power of Shiva – the destructor, the energy starts working and diminishes the negative energy within. The healing power of this mantra can fill your life with peace and happiness.

It is such a simple and short mantra to practice chanting. Also, it is said and believed that it is easiest to please Lord Shiva. Every morning, one should take the name of Lord Shiva and chant this beautiful mantra “Om Namah Shivaya” and feel the positive energy it creates.
